Frequently asked questions

The short answers about Practicing Presence — what it costs, what it asks of you, and how the practice works.

Is the app really free?

Yes. Practicing Presence is 100% free — no payment, no advertisements and no in-app purchases, ever. It is offered as a gift.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no account or sign-up, and the app never asks for your name, email or a personal profile. Download it, open it, and begin.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone, iPad and Android. Get it free from the App Store or Google Play.

What’s in the app?

A guided Morning Practice of 15 or 20 minutes, or as long as you like; Three Breaths, taken whenever unease begins to build and each hour through the day; Three Questions, asked as you breathe, for hourly renewal; and a library of Choosing Presence videos for going deeper.

How often will it remind me, and can I change that?

By default, gentle invitations arrive each hour between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. You can set whatever window fits your day, or turn reminders off entirely.

What makes it a Christian mindfulness app?

It follows the Practice of Presence, a contemplative Christian path developed by Jim Heaney. Each breath is taken with the intention of connecting with God’s spiritual energy, and the practice draws on the long Christian contemplative tradition: choosing, again and again, to release fear and return to God’s peace in the present moment.

Is it Catholic, Protestant or ecumenical?

Ecumenical. Practicing Presence draws on the shared Christian contemplative tradition rather than any one denomination, and Christians of every tradition are welcome.

I’m new to this. Where should I start?

The short video tutorials walk you through installing the app and settling into each practice. Then begin tomorrow with the Morning Practice.

What does the app do with my data?

Without an account, there is very little to hold: your reminder times are stored on your device. The privacy page covers the app and this website in full.
